Fine Art vs Commercial Art

Description:

As seen above, both photographs are clearly the same subject, professional basketball player Michael Jordan. However, their differences lie in the style of photo. The first photograph is clearly a fine art photograph. This is exemplified because of the positioning of his head, the lack of clothing, the dull grey background, and the fact that the viewer can only see half his face as he's looking towards the left. In contrast, the photo on the bottom is clearly a commercial photograph. The reason it is primarily commercial is because of the uniform that he's wearing and the slightly visible basketball fans in the grainy background. This has the effect that is promotes the sport of basketball to the audience, which in turn, makes it a commercial photograph.

Commercial art is the art of creative services, referring to art created for commercial purposes, primarily advertising. Commercial art uses a variety of platforms for viewers with the intent of promoting sale and interest of products, services, and ideas.

Both of these commercial photographs are particularly interesting. Specifically, it's clear, from the background and props, that each of these portraits are for promoting their profession. For instance, in the first photograph, the background is a chalkboard with mathematical equations written across it. This expresses that the women is probably a math teacher of some sort and is promoting her occupation. Also, the man in the second photo appears to be posing behind a camera, indicating that his profession is a photographer. Both of these photos were taken for commercial purposes as they indicate a specific occupation.

Description:

Each of these four photographs stood out to me because of the simplicity and beauty they each share. Each photograph is different in its own way as each subject is looking in a different direction. Additionally, their facial expressions are each different. Also, the texture and tone of each photograph is different, which gives each portrait its own fine art feel.

Summary of Project

In this project, we created Multiple Image photos, Panorama photos, and HDR photos. Specifically, we captured the multiple images by taking a photo burst on our cameras. Then, in photoshop, we pieced together different photos to make it appear as the subject was moving. Additionally, we captured our panoramic photos by taking an elongated photo, chopping it up, editing individual aspects of it, and finally piecing it together. Lastly, for the HDR photos, we captured identical photos, but with different lightings. Then we put all of them together in photoshop and edited them to make a unique and interesting photograph.

Description of Project

My partner, Jesper White, and I took our photos for our community project at the end of the amazing Freshman hall in our very own Lincoln High School. Specifically, we captured an abundance of photos of an Abraham Lincoln statue that stands tall in front of a large window that shows our gorgeous city. I took all the photos on the left side(Abe's right side), while Jesper took all the photos on the right side(Abe's left side). We wanted to piece together all the different components and body parts that eventually come together to form our nation's 16th president. I believe the project was very successful as we were able to artistically capture a piece from our community. The focal point of our project is certainly Abe’s head, as that is the most recognizable characteristic of his body. We intended to keep his head in one picture as it allows the viewer to label who the art is a picture of.

Explanation of Project

In this project, I took a series of photographs on top and near the Vista Bridge in SW Portland, Oregon. The intention of this field trip was to learn how to capture motion, either when it's still or when it's blurry, on our cameras. Additionally, we practiced capturing photos with a shallow and with a deep depth of field. These techniques are particularly useful as they help us add value to our pictures. In conclusion, this project was very worthwhile and I developed some skills that I plan on using in my continuing participation in photography.

Project 4 - Kaleidoscopes

Description of Project

I created my Kaleidoscopes by cropping an image into a square, making multiple copies of that image, reflecting the images in an appropriate fashion, aligning the pictures together, and lastly cropping that overall photo into a neat round kaleidoscope.

Description of Project

In this project, we took a walking field trip downtown and took photos of objects that we believed best show contrast, whether in color, value, shape, scale, or texture, and objects that show balance, specifically symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial balance.
